Thank you for your interest in volunteering! Volunteering is a great way to meet other passionate people with similar interests, hone your professional skills, and give back to the community. Seattle JACL relies on volunteer support to continue our rich history of civil rights advocacy and to challenge injustice in the future. Check out our volunteer opportunities below.

Volunteer Opportunities

Events & Programs Volunteer

Don’t have a lot of time? Help out at a Seattle JACL event! We have many opportunities where you can jump right in and make a difference. Events happen throughout the year and range from community celebrations, fundraisers, historical tours, cleanups of historical sites, educational workshops, our annual banquets and more. Opportunities include:

  • Helping with setup/cleanup, greeting visitors, and supporting the organizers at annual events;
  • Annual events including the Olympia Legislative Day of Remembrance and other Day of Remembrance events, Aki Kurose Middle School Cleanup, Annual Seattle JACL Banquet, and Member Picnic;
  • Tabling for Seattle JACL at events like the Seattle Cherry Blossom Festival or local film screenings;
  • Or create your own!

Civic Engagement Support

Help promote year-round political participation and empowerment to advocate for issues critical to the Asian American and Pacific Islanders community. Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Assisting in the planning and facilitation of civic engagement events like candidate forums;
  • Developing resources (e.g. pamphlets and social media materials) to assist voters in casting their ballots;
  • Reaching out to Japanese American King County voters to help answer questions on voting in WA state;
  • Registering new voters at King County community locations;
  • Providing Japanese/English interpretation to assist non-English speakers.

Social Media/Design Intern

We are looking for a motivated individual to help us boost our online presence. Create new professional collateral and materials for Seattle JACL, such as:

  • Designing informational brochures on Seattle JACL activities and events;
  • Developing social media and website content;
  • Designing new swag – buttons, pins, t-shirts, and stickers to spread the word;
  • Updating social media and staying current on local and national issues.

Newsletter Contributor

Collaborate with Seattle JACL board members on writing our monthly e-newsletters and quarterly newsletters (sent by email to all chapter members).

  • Writing articles and content about Seattle JACL programs, events, and other community news;
  • Assisting with the editing and copywriting of the newsletters;
  • Improving our MailChimp performance and maintaining up-to-date lists.

Q: Do I have to be a member do volunteer?
A: No you do not have to be a member, but we welcome members to also volunteer!

Q: Is there a minimum amount of hours you need to volunteer?
A: No. JACL Board members will work with your schedule to find the best opportunities for you to volunteer.

Does Seattle JACL provide service volunteer hours?
  • Yes, we are always more than happy to sign off on volunteer hours.
Is there a minimum age to volunteer at events?
  • Volunteers must be 18 years or older unless accompanied by a parent.
I am not of Japanese descent, should I even apply?
  • Yes! Seattle JACL is committed to embracing and actively supporting a diverse community of volunteers and members to support our mission. Regardless of your sex, race, sexual orientation, religion, national or ethnic origin, able-bodiedness, age, social class, or veteran status, we would love your help as a volunteer.
I am not a native English speaker. Can I apply?
  • Yes, applicants from all backgrounds are welcomed.

What is it like to volunteer?
I have never been involved in Seattle JACL, what will it be like to be introduced to Seattle JACL as a volunteer?
  • Seattle JACL is completely volunteer-run and you will have an opportunity to learn first-hand just what it means to be a community based organization. Event volunteering is a fun and engaging way to meet Seattle JACL board members and volunteers for us to introduce ourselves and the work that we do.
Can I bring my family to volunteer with me at an event?
  • Yes, we have many opportunities that would be an exciting and meaningful volunteer experience for your whole family! Please let us know that you are interested in family-volunteering opportunities.

Are there internship opportunities?
  • Yes, there are opportunities for college/university interns to take part in a quarterly internship. Please contact us at membership@seattlejacl.org.
Are there any opportunities for employment with Seattle JACL?
  • As a community-based nonprofit chapter, we do not have any paid staff.
I would like to gain volunteer experience for college and job applications. What should I do?
  • Whether you are looking for a specific timeframe, volunteering in specific areas (e.g. youth education), or looking to apply your professional skills, we are flexible and would greatly appreciate your time as a volunteer.
